Jenee Pombert

April 22, 2010

MultiGenre Choices and Planning

My first choice for a multigenre project is an obituary for John Bradley. I want to do an obituary on John Bradley because out of all the flag-raisers he lived the longest. Also, I can talk about his lifelong dream of opening a funeral home. I want to talk about how he comforted so many people, even though he had never been comforted about his war experiences. I can talk about his wife and children. I can compare his peaceful death to the other flag-raisers deaths.

My second choice for a multigenre project is a character recipe for Ira Hayes. I want to show how even though he started drinking he was merely suffering from PTSD related to his experiences in war. I want to show his true character, and I also want to help people understand that he was a good person. I want to display his bravery and his courage in battle. I want to show how much he cared for his friends even though he was in imminent danger.

My third choice for a multigenre project is a trivia game about Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. I want to teach everyone about the different symptoms and treatments. I also plan to show everyone the reasons for PTSD. I want to ask questions about statistics and the amount of soldiers that return from war and then suffer from PTSD. I think that by asking questions about these things that I will learn more myself, and I will also hear other peoples’ opinions on the different facts and theories of PTSD.

My fourth and final choice for a multigenre project is an interview of John Bradley, Ira Hayes, and Rene Gagnon about their experiences in Iwo Jima. i want to ask them about what happened, and also ask about their friends. I want to talk about if they think their friends had PTSD. I want to hear if they think they themselves ever suffered from PTSD, and if so why and how. I want to hear about what they know of PTSD. I also want to hear if they think that PTSD affects the family and friends of war veterans. And if so, then what measures do they think can be used to prevent it.

Jeneé Pombert
April 21, 2010
Flags of our Fathers: Reading Journal Chapters 17-20

A passage that moved me and that I really enjoyed is, “Within twelve minutes the other two B-29′s had joined him. At 6:07 the three bombers dipped their wings in a departing salute to Mike, Harlon, Franklin, and the thousands of other boys buried below. The pilot was one of thousands who flew to Japan unimpeded because the Marines had conquered the sulfur island. But there was something different about his flight. Secured in his jacket were twelve cyanide tablets: one for each crew member, in case they were shot down. They were on a mission whose secrets were too vital to be divulged under Japanese torture. The pilot’s name was Paul Tibbets. His plane was the Enola Gay. His payload was a single weapon nicknamed ‘Little Boy.’ His target was Hiroshima.”
The first thing that I noticed about this passage was that the pilot and his crew were willing to die for this mission. They might have had to die had the Marines not been so courageous and captured the sulfur island for the United States. As the passage pointed out, Paul Tibbets was not the only pilot that benefited from the capture ofIwo Jima . While I was reading this passage I thought about how many Marines were killed and the sacrifice that it took to make sure that America won the war. I remembered that the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki was what ended the war because the Japanese were devastated and extremely intimidated by the United States. I realized that the mission to Hiroshima and Nagasaki would have been made much more difficult, if not impossible, for the pilots. I found it extremely patriotic that the pilot was able to carry lethal medicine just in case him and his crew were captured.
I really enjoyed this passage because it claims victory for the United States. It tells a little bit about the voyage that the planes made when they were carrying their nuclear bombs. This passage also made me come into the realization of how many people died forIwo Jima and the war. I thought the nickname for the bomb was interesting, so I went online to find out a little more information on the “Little boy.” I found out that the “Little Boy” was the first atomic bomb used as a weapon. I also found out that the bomb of Nagasaki was nicknamed the “Fat Man.” They called it the “Little Boy” because it was relatively small compared to the amount of energy that it had the ability to create. It also created many different kinds of radiation, which had many devastating effects on the survivors of the bombings.

I have not added very much to my NetVibes page yet, but I do think it is a useful tool. Mrs. Hamilton helped me add my Diigo account, blog account, and comments that are added to my blog to my NetVibes account. The thing that I have found especially helpful is the Gale widget which makes it a lot easier for me to get to the pathfinders, rather than going through the school media center website. It has helped me find a few articles that I have found helpful when I am brainstorming. I decided to add a few extra things, for example magazine articles, to my NetVibes page just because it is easier to find them. Instead of having to log into my Diigo account, my Evernote account, and my Google sites, I can just log into NetVibes and all my information is in one place. I have enjoyed using the NetVibes page and it is helping me organize my information, and it is helping me with my research immensely. I wish that we had used this tool when we did our project studying the issues of Africa. I really like the feature that adds html and embeds the information onto my website. I really love the Gale widget because it has saved me an enormous amount of time. I think that my NetVibes page would show that I am an organized researcher because I like to put all my widgets into categories so they are easier to navigate. I am learning a lot through this project, and NetVibes has kept it from becoming an overwhelming amount of information.

Research Blog 3

I have been finding many awesome articles about my topic: PTSD and how it affects a war veterans family. Many ideas have popped out to me and I thought of three great research questions. I was able to answer the questions with some knowledge of each. The one that I am most looking forward to researching is how Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder affects the family as a unit. I have found a few articles both in magazines such as Time.com and also in Mrs. Hamilton’s database. I think that the literature circle meetings are extremely helpful with my brainstorming because both Ally and Ashley have really insightful blogs and comments. When I talk about my topic, they always listen carefully and then give their opinion on what my thoughts were. They help me brainstorm and think of new things that might be helpful in my research. Also, Ashley is researching a similar topic, but hers is suicide which most of the time is caused by PTSD in war veterans. Her blogs and thoughts are very helpful to me, and they get my brain thinking on how I can improve my topic and refine it to fit my interests and the requirements of the project. I have also talked to a few other people in Mrs. Lester’s classes, and they have helped me by recommending website and articles that might be helpful to my research. My teacher, Mrs. Guyer, has also helped me with my project by recommending articles and websites, and I am hoping that she will help me find a war veteran or expert to interview.

I think there are two passages that go together that I reacted strongly too. “The Marines were taking terrible casualties, but at least one Japanese saw clearly how it all would end. General Kuribayashi sent a radio message to Tokyo: Iwo Jima would soon fall, the steely martinet reported, resulting in ‘scenes of disaster in our empire. However, I comfort myself in seeing my officers and men die without regret after struggling in this inch-by-inch battle…” and “On March 8, the Marines of Easy Company found Iggy. He had been grabbed, probably from behind, and pulled into a cave full of Japanese soldiers. As the company medic,it was my father’s job to deal with what remained of Iggy’s body after three days of brutal torture.”

I reacted strongly to these passages because I can not believe that humans can cause this kind of torture on other humans on purpose. I wonder what provoked the Japanese soldiers to keep fighting in hell when they knew that they were going to be defeated. I also wonder why General Kuribayashi did not surrender or stop some of the fighting when he knew that the Marines would take over Iwo Jima soon. He knew they were going to die, and yet he still let his men fight. They thought it was an honor to die without surrendering. The generals, officials, and soldiers did not seem to have the love for each other that the Marines did. They showed no mercy on the Marines, and they even caught some and tortured them brutally. They knew they were going to lose, but because of their “samurai” beliefs and customs they did not believe it was honorable to surrender or show mercy on their fellow human beings. A few survivors were so ashamed because they had surrendered that they could not return to Japan after the war.

I do not understand why the Japanese soldiers had to torture the Marines that they captured. I do not believe that they did it without someone forcing their hand. They caught and tortured Iggy, and because of what they did John Bradley had to deal with what was left. Because of what they did, not only was Iggy silenced, but John Bradley was silenced forever even though he was still alive. When I read this chapter I thought of during World War II when Adolf Hilter was forcing the hands of the Nazis to torture and kill millions of innocent Jews. I believe that the Japanese were somehow brainwashed into thinking that the only choices they had were to torture and kill Marines or to die.

I have not been able to use my NetVibes page very much, but so far I really enjoy it. I have all my widgets and websites in one place. Also since there is a link to my Diigo account I have all my research websites there too. I have really enjoyed using Diigo as my main bookmarking tool because it is easy to use. I do not like the toolbar for Diigo because it has given me alot of trouble with the high-lighting and the floating sticky notes. I have found alot of interesting information about Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and how it is affecting families. I used Mrs. Hamilton’s research database again and it was really amazing. I typed in PTSD, and then on the side in the tab section there was one for families. I clicked that one and three websites popped up with exactly the information I was looking for. Also one of the websites that came up had more links on it for even more resources about PTSD and how it affects the families and friends of the war veterans. I also have found quite a few magazine articles, but I am having trouble finding podcasts and videos on my exact topic which is required for my project. I have not yet decided how I want to do my war veteran interview, but I think that I might want to do a supervised E-Mail with a expert on my topic.

Passage: “And then, as unexpectedly as news of the invasion itself, a radiant image of victory burned its way around the curve of the earth. One of the first to notice it was John Bodkin, the AP photo editor in Guam. On a routine night in his bureau office, he casually picked up a glossy print of the ‘replacement’ photograph. He looked at it. He paused, shook his head in wonder, and whistled. ‘Here’s one for all time’ he exclaimed to the bureau at large. Then without wasting another second, he radio-photoed the image to AP headquarters in New York at seven A.M., Eastern War Time. Soon afterward, wire-photo machines in newsrooms across the country were picking up the AP image. Newspaper editors, accustomed to sorting through endless battle photographs, would cast an idle glance at it , then stand fascinated. ‘Lead photo, page one, above the fold,’ they would bark. News pros were not the only ones bedazzled by the photo.”

I reacted very strongly to this passage because I think it contradicts what people say about war. Some people say that in war is glory, and some people say that all war is is endless bloodshed, gore, and violence. I believe that both of these statements are not completely true. In All Quiet on the Western Front the young boys who volunteered were tricked by their elders and superiors into thinking that in war is endless glory, and when they got to the front they realized how inaccurate that is. In both books there is much bloodshed, but I do not think it is endless and for no purpose. However, I think that the Photograph proves that there is some glory in war, and I think that war is a mixture of what people think. That picture showed glory, but without all the bloodshed of the other Marines that fought and died on Iwo Jima for the control of that mountain there would be no Photograph.

I also think that this proves that a “picture has a thousand words”. Many people in the United States reacted very strongly to the Photograph because it was a symbol of hope and victory. The people in America had been engrossed in the battle for Iwo Jima, and they had seen many war photos before. But no other photo had entranced the citizens like the “replacement” flagraising photo. This Photograph left people standing in awe. I think that the media was wrong to turn the real story of Iwo Jima and the flagraising photo into more than it was. They turned the truth, which was that it was quiet and peaceful when the “replacement” flag was raised, into a glorified trip up the mountain during intense battle fire and raised the flag in the midst of chaos. I have to admit that before I started reading this book I had believed what the media had said. I also believed that this was the only flag that was raised when really it was the replacement flag because the other flag had been too small and the officers wanted it for a souvenier. The media lied to the public about the Photograph which, to me, diminishes the majesty of the photo. Now when I look at the photo I just see that the press lied, and I cannot see the true beauty in it.

My research has gone pretty well over the last few days. I have decided to use Diigo instead of Evernote just because Diigo is easier for me to use. I like Diigo, and I used it last semester on my Africa project. I have found a lot of interesting information about Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder so far. I have also narrowed down which aspect I want to do to a couple of choices, but I think I want to research how PTSD affects children and why it affects them so differently from the way it affects adults. I have found that there are more symptoms than I thought and that they have to be divided into three different groups, and then they have to be divided within those groups into more categories. I have been using Mrs. Hamilton’s pathfinder and information database. I have also used Gale, and I even used the Global Issues database that I used last semester on my Africa and AIDS project. I have enjoyed using IGoogle and Google Sites again because they are very easy to use, and they keep me so much more organized in my research. I have bookmarked many sites, and I have about six articles ready for me to use. I am excited to use my research in my next project which I believe is going to be another Presentation Zen. I found last semester that doing the Presentation Zen made the issues in Africa become real to me and I understood why we researched them.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, also known as PTSD, is a disorder that develops after someone goes through an ordeal that traumatizes them or puts their body in a state of shock. One of the most common causes of PTSD is military experiences, especially in men. PTSD is not limited to the people who went through the experience, but also can develop in the family and friends of that person. There are many things that can cause PTSD such as war, rape, traffic collisions, physical abuse, medical procedures (which is most common in children), or natural disasters. It can take anywhere from hours to days to years for PTSD to develop.

I decided to research this topic because I have suffered from PTSD twice in my life. It speaks to me because I understand exactly what the articles are saying when they speak of symptoms and causes of PTSD. I think it is very important to research because I think there must be better ways to treat it and even prevent it. I think that by researching it more ways to prevent it can be found because someone can be spared the suffering of PTSD by simple research. I think that symptoms can be diagnosed earlier which in turn spares the person that contracted it the extra time it would take to fix it. I also think that by researching it I can learn ways to prevent myself from having to go through it again. Research can also spare a family the suffering of seeing their loved one go through the extra ordeal after they have already been through enough.

I know the basic things about PTSD such as the symptoms, causes, and some treatments. There are many causes, and children and war veterans are especially prone to developing PTSD. I know that there are three main types of symptoms including: Re-Experiencing the Traumatic Event, Avoidance and Emotional Numbing, and Symptoms of Increased Physical and Emotional Arousal. There are many sub-categories within these types which I am hoping to learn. I also want to learn why children are prone to developing PTSD. I also want to learn why the symptoms of PTSD get worse over time and not better.

Passage:”Robert Leader goes so far as to say this brotherhood involved a deep love: I believe we were out there fighting for our buddies. It’s deceptive because we’d fight over a beer, insult each other’s sister, but then we were ready to risk our lives for each other. It’s like a domestic fight where the cop goes in and the man and woman, at each other’s throats moments before, beat up the cop! No Marine would admit he loved another Marine but it was true. We had a love for each other. My father typified this brotherhood in many ways.”

In All Quiet on the Western Front:

In this book the soldiers loved each other, and some of them did die for one another or were willing to. Kat was willing to sacrifice his time and effort into teaching the recruits how to survive during trench warfare. The officers however did not feel themselves equal to the recruits and soldiers. In fact, they found themselves quite superior to the other men and took the best of everything. They took the best clothes, housing, and always ate and drank before any of their men did. They took advantage of the men who were in their power. Himmelstoss is a great example of this because when Tjaden and another soldier had bed-wetting problems Himmelstoss decided to call it sheer laziness and take the matter into his own hands. He had Tjaden and the other soldier sleep on bunks one on top of the other, so that when one wet the bed it got on the one below and then the next night they would switch. The German soldiers I do not believe had love for each other because they would not allow themselves to love: They were indifferent. I do believe that they had a connection and a comradeship with each other.

In Flags of our Fathers:

On the contrary from All Quiet on the Western Front, the Marines in Flags of our Fathers had a love for each other. They cared for each other, and when they were in battle looked out for each other. They had, not just a comradeship, but also a brotherhood. They did fight amongst themselves, but in battle they were all business and survival. The officers also “never took a drink before his men did”. The officers saw themselves as leaders and protectors. Many officers told their soldiers that their job was to bring as many of the soldiers home to their mothers as possible. They did not believe themselves higher up in the ranks and respected everyone. They did not take advantage of the men, but rather kept them disciplined. They put them through rigorous training, but they also were not cruel about it. One scene of this love and respect struck me. It was when the Marines had just landed on an island, but then their reinforcements’ ships got stuck on the reef. When the Marines on the ships realized what happened they knew that any hesitation could cost their fellow Marines their lives. So they jumped into the water, took their equipment and rifles up in their hands above their heads, and waded under heavy fire to the island. Because they did this the Marines were able to capture this island called Tarawa.
